Visit of the wonderful villa in Tivoli, a splendid imperial residence built by Emperor Hadrian in the period from 118 to 128 AD. The villa extends over an area of about 130 hectares and is considered the largest and most luxurious residence that has ever been built in Italy. The architecture was inspired by the beauties scattered throughout the Empire, the most famous places in the provinces of the empire were reproduced with their names.
With our guide we will visit this collection of imperial palaces, temples, theaters, spas and swimming pools, telling the story and the characters of the time.
The villa was built by the will of Cardinal Ippolito d’Este appointed governor for life of Tivoli by Pope Julius III in 1550. The work was entrusted to the architect Pirro Ligorio who was assisted by the best artists of the time including Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In addition to the beautiful apartments, it is amazing what the genius of the artists involved were able to achieve by exploiting the wealth of water that the area was endowed with. Fountains, water features and gardens of unique beauty.
We will visit the apartments, then the gardens with the Vialone, the Grand Loggia, Diana’s Cave, the Rotonda dei Cipressi, the Fishponds, the numerous monumental fountains.
