Subiaco is a small village not far from Rome whose peculiarity is undoubtedly the ancient historic center perched up high and crossed by narrow streets and dotted with typical tiled roofs.
Totally immersed in nature and bathed by the Aniene river, it is a perfect destination for a day out of town full of history, culture and traditions.
After a short walk in the village of Subiaco where it will also be possible to see the ancient Roman bridges, we will enter the Monastery of Saint Scolastica.
The complex, whose construction began in the sixth century with the Oratory of Saint Silvestro, is made up of three different cloisters built in different eras in a Cosmatesque, Gothic and Renaissance style.
The neoclassical Cathedral of Saint Scolastica is characterized by the presence of the Romanesque bell tower with a square plan. The library still exists in the monastery where illuminated books hand made by Benedictine monks from Italy and abroad were produced.
The last part of the visit is dedicated to the Monastery of Saint Benedetto. The building leans against the rocky wall of Mount Taleo and was built where Saint Benedict lived for three years as a hermit at the beginning of the sixth century. Its particular position and structure make it a true icon of the place and a fundamental stop for those visiting the area.
The most ancient works are from the Byzantine period while the first faithful representation of St. Francis, who as a pilgrim stopped in the monastery in 1223, dates back to the 13th century. A great cycle of works by Magister Consulus, a painter from Subiaco, and a mosaic representing a Greek Cross located on the entrance door.
