Appia Antica Regional Park: a record-breaking area of green

Between the populous seventh and eighth municipality of Rome we find an oasis that appears to be there to give a break from the incessant passage of cars and buses.

This is the Appia Antica Regional Park complex, a green oasis easily accessible by public transport that extends over more than four thousand hectares, thus winning the title of the largest urban park in Europe.

Park of the Caffarella and Aqueducts

A puzzle of nature and history to escape the city

The regional park consists of several elements, the most famous of which are undoubtedly the Caffarella and Aqueducts area.

The Caffarella park has been and continues to be a perfect setting for ancient myths and legends related to the flow of the Almone river, a tributary of the Tiber, considered sacred by the Romans. There are numerous testimonies of antiquity such as the Nymphaeum of Egeria which belonged to Herodes Atticus who used it on hot summer days to receive visitors.

In addition to an immense historical heritage, the Caffarella also preserves a strong natural heritage by hosting various species of birds (that can be observed thanks to small structures for birdwatching), reptiles and mammals.

The area of the Park of the Acquaducts is a treasure trove of impressive architectural structures that left even Goethe breathless while, passing by during his Grand Tour, he compared them to a series of triumphal arches. The most famous are the Felice aqueduct and the Marcio aqueduct which wind over the remains of Latin streets that are still well preserved.

It is a place where you can find peace and take refuge in a historical mosaic well incorporated into nature which in these parks is both the setting and the protagonist, giving the feeling of being in the countryside even though a short distance from the metro A. Definitely suitable for a trip with the little ones who will appreciate the presence of animals and where adults can take advantage of farms to stock up on zero-kilometer products.
